Two roads, same destination
Carl Jung was deeply aware of the Eastern concept of the Self — the One Reality that underlies all individual experience. Yet, in the Western context, he always insisted the personal ego must first be strengthened through the process of individuation before one can safely engage with the larger Self — a view remarkably similar to Self-realised yogi Baba Muktananda saying he preferred strong egos to weak ones because strong egos could withstand the rigours of the psycho-spiritual process straight away without the need for strengthening. For Jung, individuation — the conscious confrontation with the Shadow, Anima, and Animus — builds the ego’s capacity to hold and discriminate, so when the Self eventually takes the lead, the individual is prepared to dissolve into it.
